Does insurance cover foundation repair?

In most cases, standard homeowners policies don't cover foundation repair caused by settling or soil movement, but there are exceptions.

HomeRelay Pros is an independent homeowner resource and referral service. We are not a foundation repair contractor and do not perform foundation repair or structural work. Paid referrals through a partner network. The recipient confirms your service, ZIP, availability and terms; a call does not guarantee a local provider or appointment.

Usually not covered

  • Settling, shrinking or expansion of soil
  • Wear and tear or poor construction
  • Gradual damage from drainage or groundwater
  • Earthquake or flood damage, unless you have separate coverage

Possible exceptions

  • Sudden plumbing leaks that damage the foundation (coverage varies)
  • Damage from a covered event like a fallen tree or vehicle impact
  • Sinkhole coverage, which some Florida and Tennessee policies address

What to do

Read your policy's exclusions or ask your agent before filing. Keep photos and repair estimates. This is general information, not insurance advice; your policy terms decide coverage.

Paying for repairs
